Description

Anemone (Shqāʾiq al-Nuʿmān) In Arabic, the word Anemone (Al-Nuʿmān) carries the meaning of rising from death, while in Syriac it signifies resurrection and rebirth. This flower exists between two seasons; its appearance marks the end of winter—its coldness and harshness—and announces the beginning of spring, with its blossoms and light. Delicate and short-lived, the anemone has a fragile stem that quickly surrenders to the spring sun. Yet despite its vulnerability, it is deeply enchanting. Throughout history, it has symbolized blood, war, love, patience, and a beauty inseparably bound to pain. The anemone holds a powerful presence in ancient mythologies: in Phoenician mythology through Adonis and Ishtar, in Canaanite beliefs tied to fertility and growth, and in Babylonian legends. It is also rooted in Arabic literature, associated with Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Mundhir, one of the most renowned kings of Al-Hira. Beyond myth and literature, it stands today as the flower of Palestine and its martyrs. Across all its narratives, the anemone is the beautiful flower that grows from blood—a symbol of beauty emerging from the cruelty and ugliness of life, and of hope born from pain. This symbolism reflects my personal experience, shaped by suffering and transformation. My journey—largely defined by health struggles that brought me close to the boundary between life and death—became a space where I refused to surrender to ugliness. Instead, I persisted in creating something beautiful from it. In my view, and within the realm of art, beauty forged from pain and distortion is unparalleled. It is a haunting beauty—one that leaves an enduring mark on those who encounter it. I wanted my life to resemble the anemone: a beauty whose magic does not conceal the pain that gave birth to it, and whose pain does not diminish its beauty. The worn, torn shoe represents a life that has walked through rough paths, leaving scars that cannot be erased. Just before discarding it, God allowed anemones to grow from within it—transforming its ugliness into meaning, and giving it a reason to remain. The white cloth symbolizes my repeated, failed attempts to hide and disappear from life. Yet I emerged after shaping a life that resembles a work of art. The red thread of fate is a thread that may tangle or stretch, but never breaks. It binds us to our destiny regardless of time, place, or circumstance—a destiny that carries with it what I have planted: anemones.
